Fleet Tracking Managers Love New GPS Technology

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/g1uGM)

Are you an owner of a company? Do you use tractor trailers to transport your goods or services? If so, tractor trailers are becoming targets of thieves in various places around the country. Would you like to rest easy knowing that you can track your goods using fleet tracking? It will come in handy not only to assist in the recovery of stolen goods but also allows you to monitor the truck (e.g., going the right direction, validation of time driven, etc.).

Basically, fleet tracking allows you to monitor/track any number of vehicles in real time, indicating the precise location and direction of movement of tractor trailers or other vehicles. They are helpful because they allow a trucking company to monitor and make necessary changes to routes if something unforeseen occurs (e.g., major car accident, bad weather, etc.). Fleet tracking uses GPS technology to monitor the whereabouts of a truck. GPS (global positioning system) units located on assets, people, possessions, etc., transmit a signal to one of the satellites (24 in all) located above the earth. From the satellites in outer space, the real-time movement and location of the asset is transmitted to a GPS-enabled device. This allows tracking of the asset by the person possessing the GPS-enabled device. Certain GPS tracking software allows you to examine a track later and determine the movements of an asset (i.e., tracking in historical time).

Qualcomm Enterprise Services has introduced its new Trailer Tracks 210. It will be officially added at the beginning of 2011. The TT 210 is said to have much better coverage in Mexico, solar energy, Bluetooth capability, more memory, and a more compact design. The TT 210 will allow fleet owners to monitor their assets in transit from one portal. The company also plans to offer its StarTrak Reefer Track System for refrigerated shipments. The Reefer Track system will allow its users to manage its fleet shipments via remote control. It can set alarms, timers, and begin defrosts on refrigerated products in transport. Temperatures and set points are also at the control of customers through their Reefer Track system. Additionally, this new technology on its newer line of trucks allows for tracking of and control levels of fuel consumption.

As technology advances the consumer is the person who wins. Faster delivery times, less food spoilage, tracking fuel usage - all add up to cost savings. Business owners are smart to embrace new technology. Are you keeping up with improvements in your field? Make it your goal for 2010!

GPS Tracking Devices Let New Car Owners Relax

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/kdAfB)
After months of saving and planning, you’ve purchased a new car. Now you find yourself with the fear shared by most new vehicle owners, the fear of theft. Various websites offer advice on keeping your vehicle safe from thieves. However, what if these tips fail? What if your new car does get stolen? How do you or the police find it again?

GPS devices, since their invention, have had many purposes. Companies have used them to keep items safe and keep track of employees. Individuals, too, have made use of these devices. The devices help them track their family members-- including their possibly unfaithful spouses or their own children and provide many other uses. Among these many uses is vehicle tracking. Vehicle tracking allows, among other uses, car owners to track down a stolen car.

Of course, most people think their car will never be stolen and they’ll never need vehicle tracking devices. Auto owners repeatedly leave their windows down, an invitation to car thieves, and sometimes even forget their keys in their cars. In addition, cars are even, at times, left running. Of course, the best way to prevent theft is to take precautions--roll up windows, turn off cars, and take keys out. However, what if you take all these precautions and your car is still stolen?

Some cities, including Houston, found that auto thefts rose in 2009. Although one can only imagine that many of these thefts were due to a lack of foresight from vehicle owners, some of these cars were probably stolen from owners who had taken all the right safeguards. Still, these car owners likely forgot one last safeguard--their GPS vehicle tracking devices. These devices allow owners and police officers to discover where the car is, what streets it’s traveled, and even what speed it’s going and what stops it’s made. In addition, the devices are easy to hide, so car thieves may not see it and think to remove or disable it.

GPS vehicle tracking is less expensive than having a car damaged or stolen. Technology has improved so that is it even less complicated than ever! Take a little extra effort and invest now to safeguard one of your most necessary possessions. You could lose it and never get it back.

Recorded GPS Tracking Data Verifies Your Actions

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/vMJBF)
Police investigations into automobile accidents are very time consuming and often are subject to a certain amount of speculation.  Even if there are witnesses, those accounts can differ significantly.  This is all the more reason that GPS Tracking devices should be installed into your vehicles.  Providing verification services is one small, but important part that these units can have during your travels. Here are the important ways that they can help you:

Verifying Location

Were you where you said that you were?  Do you remember the details of your accident? Most people’s minds black out the actual events of an accident. The chances of you remembering the exact location of your car is very low. GPS Tracking can provide that information to within a few feet.  This accuracy can mean the difference between liability on your part or on the part of another driver.

Verifying Speed

How fast were you traveling at the time of the incident?  GPS Tracking knows and will tell you. Your speed is recorded as a standard part of real-time tracking events. This can help you avoid a ticket for a moving violation.

Verifying Direction of Travel

Where was your vehicle headed at the time of the accident?  GPS Tracking reveals this information. Combining this information with your own account of the incident puts the issue to rest for good. Pinpoint locates helps police with accurate reporting.

Verifying Evidence

When police write up a report, it usually says that the ‘evidence shows’ or some such statement. And, if there are any witnesses, they can have differing stories as to what they saw. It is a very subjective process that needs more than conjecture and speculation.  GPS Tracking devices answer critical questions that make guesses go away.  When it comes time to assess blame so that the proper insurance company is contacted for coverage, using GPS Tracking is a must.

In accidents where there is a fatality, the utmost care must be given to make sure that an accurate report of what happened is as factual as possible.  That can make the difference in knowing what happened so that family members can get closure and the answers that they crave.  Then the ‘how did this happen’ goes away and the ‘why’ questions can be examined.

It’s a painful process but it is one that can be made better with GPS Tracking.  Install one today into your vehicles and have a better verification process at your fingertips for accident investigators and create peace of mind knowing that you have the facts to recreate an incident and come to a logical conclusion of events in time of crisis. Although it is tough, knowing, makes things seem better somehow.

Traditional GPS Tracking is a Better Long Term Solution

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/YTnwU)
Although cell phone GPS trackers are not as accurate as traditional GPS trackers, they can still be used to catch thieves as one teenager in Seaholm, England discovered recently.
Cell phone GPS tracking devices have a few faults other than their lack of accuracy. The GPS tracker runs off the same battery as everything else on the phone. With today’s high-tech phones that can do everything except cook your food for you, batteries do not always last long. Having a short battery life can make it impossible to track anything with a cell phone GPS tracker. On the other hand, traditional GPS tracking systems don’t perform multiple functions. They just track. They track location, speed, and direction of travel and send all this information to a satellite. The simplicity of these tracking devices makes them more reliable than cell phone trackers, because their batteries can be trusted. Another problem with cell phone GPS trackers is that they rely on cell phone towers for service. Everyone knows that cell phone service is not the easiest thing to find, and it always happens that you lose service just when you need it most. Traditional GPS trackers don’t use cell phone towers. Instead, they send their information to satellites in space, making them much more consistent.
But cell phone trackers can still be useful. Jacob Rothenberg, a high school freshman from Seaholm, England used his cell phone GPS tracker to locate his cell phone and iPod after they were stolen from his locker one day at school. The teen’s family cell phone plan included the Sprint family locator, which easily led him to a house address. Jacob then called his mother and she confronted the thief, another teenager from the same high school.
Since Jacob was able to use GPS technology to locate his missing cell phone, the local law enforcement officials were able to locate various items that had been stolen from three other lockers that same day at school. Unfortunately, some of the stolen items had already been sold at a pawn shop, but many of the items were returned, and the students whose missing items were not returned were reimbursed for their value.
Some people might find cell phone GPS trackers to be very helpful in tracking their cell phones in case they are stolen, just like Rothenberg did. Others might prefer to use the more reliable and more accurate traditional GPS tracking devices. Either way, people who choose to use GPS technology can rest assured that their valuable belongings are well-protected.
Thanks to the GPS technology on his cell phone, Jacob Rothenberg was able to locate his cell phone and iPod and bust the stealing teenager at his school in Seaholm, England. Others should consider using GPS technology to protect their valuable electronics as well.

Protect What You Already Have (and Save Money!)

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/plCkA)
Theft in the construction industry is becoming increasingly common as bulldozers and Bobcats disappear from jobsites. Also common is to have parts and doors stolen from heavy equipment to be sold for scrap. Random items such as skid loaders, forks, rims, electric motors, tractor weights, concrete rebar, PTO shafts and more are routinely stolen from construction sites. A GPS tracking device is the key to protecting assets on the job site. In the case of rental equipment, the device can alert you if the equipment leaves a predetermined area. Fleet equipment and vehicles can be closely monitored, also. Real time surveillance of out-of-the way locations can provide additional security. Geo-fencing capabilities ensure that when an asset perimeter is breached - an alarm and text message is generated and you immediately what is happening.

A GPS or Global Positioning Satellite is a navigation system based on twenty-four satellites launched by the U.S. Department of Defense and this world-wide tracking system is now available to anyone who wants to use it. The satellites orbit the earth twice each day, transmitting very precise location information. It is available for commercial use and many businesses are actively using it to improve their delivery times, save on fuel and thwart unnecessary employee activities.

Recently it was reported in New Hampshire that doors had been stolen from Bobcats left at a construction site. Aside from the steep expense, the doors have to be ordered and can potentially delay a job. In fact, because this is such a big problem, the doors are frequently on backorder. This crime was solved with the owner happened to see his door with an identifying mark on it listed on Craigslist and was able to trace it back to the thief. However, most of the time people without GPS tracking devices on their equipment aren’t so lucky.

Up until now, the theft of heavy equipment was a frequent and unfortunate occurrence and a very difficult crime to solve. However, with the advent of GPS tracking devices, a small tracking device can easily be concealed on the heavy front door of a Bobcat which will enable law enforcement to easily find it. The devices are so small and inconspicuous that it will not be obvious they are in place and if a piece of equipment does happen to be stolen, it can be easily recovered.

While the purchase of GPS tracking devices to prevent construction industry theft is an investment it may very well pay for itself in lower insurance rates, less downtime and in the retention of very expensive assets. It is well worth the money spent to prevent theft of valuable equipment.

A Watchful GPS Tracking Device Keeps Employees Sharp

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/om1ZU)

You know how you immediately change your driving habits when you are being followed by a police car? You are so careful in making sure that each movement is within the law. This is also true when it comes to your work. Employees who are closely watched tend to work better and with more productivity than those who are not monitored. GPS Tracking works in the same manner. Verification of activities is one of the strongest reasons to obtain and implement a system.

Location monitoring is the most valuable of benefits. When assets are outfitted with GPS Tracking devices, monitoring location helps owners keep track of where they are at all times. For employees this means that they must make sure that they are where they should be at all times when using company cars and trucks. Personal use is no longer acceptable and long distance driving to favorite restaurants can be discovered during lunch hours.

If employees use their vehicles in compliance to rules and regulations of the company, there will be no problems, but if they deviate even a little bit, it can be discovered. Company managers can watch to make sure that drivers are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Important tasks like running efficient routes and even monitoring engine idling are now possible. Verifying employee activity keeps them in check.

Along with the implementation of a GPS Tracking system must come an employee meeting so that they know what is coming and what will be expected of them when a system is up and running. What businesses will find is that the greater part of their employees will be compliant and will live within the policies that are set forth. Then, the few that are not will find themselves without a job. And, the other benefit is that profitability will be maintained for the business (if not increased). Being able to better manage assets is a valuable exercise for any business these days, and GPS Tracking delivers. That is, especially when coupled with employee compliance and involvement. It only takes a small amount of time and effort to make this happen.

Vitamins Hijacked (then Swiftly Recovered with GPS Tracking)

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/Ph5bt)
Truck drivers make their living by driving long hours and transporting large amounts of goods within a state or between states. They are targets for theft because their goods carry significant value. Can you imagine your rather large tractor trailer stolen right from the truck stop while you were dining? It continues to happen, even though safeguards are in place to protect expensive consumer goods traveling cross country.

A GPS tracking system allows a person possessing a GPS-enabled device to track people or possessions that have a GPS device attached to them. The GPS tracking system has twenty-four satellites spread in six orbital spheres above the earth. These satellites provide coverage for virtually every place on earth. The system transmits signals from the satellites to the GPS-enabled device, allowing tracking of a person or possession in real-time. You are able to precisely locate and follow movements through GPS tracking. GPS tracking may be used for historical time. With the assistance of tracking software, you can watch a track later on video and determine the movement of a person or possession.

A GPS tracking system came in handy in a recent theft of a tractor trailer transporting $500,000 worth of over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, mostly consisting of vitamins. The Batesville, Arkansas-based truck began its journey in Pennsylvania and journeyed into Virginia where the driver and passenger stopped to eat at a Glade Spring truck stop. It was stolen as they ate inside. The truck driver and passenger later reported they were sure they locked the truck. Washington County Virginia Sheriff’s detective Jaime Blevins tracked the stolen truck using a GPS tracking device placed with the pharmaceutical vitamins. About ninety minutes after the truck was reported stolen, police recovered the truck in Tennessee. Tennessee Highway Patrol officers located the abandoned truck on the side of the road with the cargo left intact. However, the seal on the truck was broken, indicating the robber inspected the goods. The thief abandoned the truck before an interstate truck weighing station so he would avoid inspection by highway officials.

The GPS tracking system set up in the cargo sent signals to Jaime Blevins, his Virginia-based law enforcement partners, and highway officials in Kentucky and Tennessee. Once the truck stopped moving, Tennessee patrolmen recovered the stolen truck. Delay in shipment was the only consequence. They were lucky this thief did not destroy the rig, trailer or the contents. Having GPS tracking find the truck fast prevented further damage of precious goods. Shouldn’t GPS be a part of your delivery process?

How to Select GPS? Active and Passive GPS Tracking Explained

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/HbITF)
Now that you’ve made the decision to purchase a GPS tracking device, you may be wondering whether to purchase an active or a passive device. While many GPS trackers look the same, there is a clear difference between active and passive GPS trackers. Keep in mind your present and future needs for GPS tracking when deciding on this purchase. A good solution always comes from thorough research!

[caption id="attachment_5625" align="alignleft" width="90" caption="Small Tracking Device (Active)"]Gps Tracking[/caption]

If you’re looking for a GPS tracker that can track movement in real-time, then you’ll want to look at devices such as the Informer Lite or the PT 200. These devices allow you to view a vehicle’s speed, stop duration, and location as a vehicle is in progress. Rocky Mountain Tracking active devices all come with our own software, which will allow you to view a vehicle’s progress from your home or office at any time of the day or night. Because the tracking process is on-going they require a monthly fee. If you are tracking your fleet of plumbing vans or construction equipment – this is the way to go.

Active devices are great for law enforcement purposes, keeping tabs on children, or safeguarding an elderly loved one while you are away. All of our active devices are simple to install, so you don’t have to worry about tricky installation. There may be a discount as well with your insurance company if they know your asset or vehicle is protected with a live gps tracking system. Be sure to look into this right away and take advantage of discounts!

[caption id="attachment_5626" align="alignleft" width="140" caption="Tracking Key Pro Passive GPS Device"]GPS Tracking from Rocky Mountain Tracking[/caption]

Unlike active GPS trackers, passive devices are unable to monitor a vehicle’s movement in real-time. However, these devices are ideal for keeping an eye on a teenager or finding out what a spouse is really up to. In order to use a device such as the Tracking Key or Tracking Key Pro, simply attach this device to a car, and remove the device when you want to view data. By downloading the data gathered by a Tracking Key, you can find out the location, date, speed, and stop time of any vehicle. So you are looking at historical data, not real-time “as it happens” type of data. Remember, these devices must come back to you in order for you to unhook them from the car and attach them to the computer and download the data.

The main advantage to a passive device is that these trackers are cost-effective. Passive devices do not come with a monthly fee, so you only have to pay a fee when you need to locate the item. For instance one of the passive trackers for RMT costs $7.95 for 10 locates. If the car is traveling during the times you send out a locate signal, you will have to send out another one to see if the vehicle is parked. It is much easier to apprehend a parked car with the thief in it! As with active trackers, passive devices are also easy to install. No matter what kind of tracker you choose from RMT, you can count on us to keep your tracking purchase a secret.

All of our packages arrive at your door marked with a simple “RMT” insignia. You’ll also find that we offer a number of different ways to pay for the device that you want (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Google Checkout, and PayPal). Give us a call today, and let us find the best fit of either active or passive GPS tracking devices for your needs.

Le Tour de France and GPS Devices Increase Fan Involvement

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/A3SFz)

The HTC-Columbia team will bring something unique to Le Tour de France spectators this year. Instead of simply viewing the team from the sidelines or via television, each team member will be equipped with a HTC Legend smartphone. In turn, these smartphones will be linked up to Google’s new “My Tracks” GPS app.

The app will provide spectators with a real-time view of the Columbian cycling team. By logging onto the “My Tracks Tour” page, those who are rooting for the Columbian team can choose a cyclist, and view his heart rate, power, speed, and cadence. Viewers will also be able to map a cyclist’s exact location using Google Maps. Not only is this a great way for fans of the cycling event to get closer to riders, it’s also the first time that Tour de France participants have been tracked using a GPS device.

Average cyclists can take part in GPS mapping and tracking too. Even though everyday cyclists may not be part of Le Tour de France, carrying a GPS tracking device while cycling is a great way to map progress. A passive GPS tracking device such as the Tracking Key will enable any cyclist to chart location, speed, stop time, and other major factors. By taking the time to track progress, any everyday cyclists may eventually enter the famed Tour de France thanks to help from a personal GPS tracking device.

College Students Give Internal GPS Laptop Tracking a Big Thumbs Up!

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/PlWRe)
GPS tracking devices are not new technology. They have been around for decades now, helping everyday people keep their most important belongings safe. Parents trust these devices to monitor the movements of a young driver or an elderly parent with Alzheimer’s Disease. GPS tracking capabilities have been able to find missing children as well as track wayward spouses. Protection from theft is one of their major purposes. They have been used to protect priceless art, construction equipment, air conditioning units, and vehicles. And now Sony is combining many of those ideals into their new P series of Vaio laptops.

sony vaioThe GPS tracking devices in these Sony laptops are real time devices. This means that the tracker is continually sending out signals to satellites, giving its location, direction, and speed of travel. This information can be viewed easily on any computer with internet access. The information from the GPS tracking device can be shown on a virtual map so that it is easy to see everywhere the laptop (and its owner) has been that day.

The new P series of Sony Vaio laptops weight 1.3 pounds and are 8 inches long. These mini-laptops have a 64GB SSD drive, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, and Windows 7 Home Premium in addition to the built in GPS tracking capabilities. The P series comes in a variety of bright colors (green, pink, and orange) that will appeal to teens as well as the sleek black and white looks. The mini-laptops are light and easily portable, while offering plenty of storage space, a 4.5 hour standard battery, and a widescreen. The laptop comes with headphones and has a built in webcam and microphone that makes it easy for teens to Skype with their friends. Of course, the laptops would also be ideal for people who travel a lot for business since they are small and lightweight and can easily be slipped into a carry on bag.

Although it has just been released, the new mini-laptops have received many favorable reviews. The brand new P seriesare now available, starting at 899.99.

The GPS tracking device in one of these laptops serves a dual purpose. It will help a parent locate a missing teen, if the teen was carrying the laptop along. It would also make locating and retrieving a stolen laptop a very simple job for law enforcement officers. If Sony experiences success with their new trackable P series, it will soon become a standard feature in laptops.

Geocaching is GPS Hide and Seek Fun

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/ey7H9)
While most Americans will be having picnics with family or friends and watching fireworks, some people will be participating in the world’s largest geocaching event, GeoWoodstock. This event will took place on July 3rd, 2010  in the Seattle area, and could included as many as five thousand geocachers. Some participants traveled from as far as Guam and Germany to compete in the event. Participants used their gps tracking devices to find caches in the Triad, a region filled with geocaches, most of them small trinkets. However, also located in the Triad are two famous caches, what most hunters are most eager to find. One famous cache is the Project Ape Cache, and the other is the very first geocache ever hidden, the Original Stash.

So what exactly is geocaching, and why is it so popular? This relatively unknown hobby is actually done by several million people around the globe. Players of this game use gps tracking devices to find geocaches hidden in different outdoor areas around the world. A geocache is usually a small container such as a plastic bag or other waterproof container; however, a geocache can be as small as an acorn, or even as large as a trashcan. Each geocache contains a “treasure”, usually a small item such as a button, picture, or coin. Every geocache also contains a logbook so that each hunter who discovers the geocache can record their find.Geocaching Success Some participants travel to play this game, going to Hawaii or even Europe to find caches. Others just play locally and search for geocaches hidden near their homes. For some, geocaching is a serious hobby. For example, one cache hunter actually traveled to the jungles of Brazil to search for a certain cache. However, usually geocachers stay closer to home. People who participate in geocaching compare it to hunting for treasure. Geocaching provides an opportunity for those who enjoy the outdoors to get outside. This hobby also gives a reason to travel for those who enjoy exploring new places.

Although this hobby has only existed for a few years, its popularity has spread rapidly. The game includes over one million caches in over two hundred different nations. Caches have even been found in remote places like Budapest. Although it is worldwide, many people are unaware of this unique hobby, probably because geocaching is a fairly new pastime. In fact, it has only existed for about the past ten years. The game was started by Groundspeak, a company which also hosts a website for players to record their finds. Each geocacher can also create a profile where they can post which caches they have found with their gps tracking devices. Geocachers can also view other’s profiles and even compete with others for a certain cache. Although the largest geocacher website is run by Groundspeak, there are several other smaller websites that target geocache participants. To find out more about geocaching visit www.geocaching.com or travel to Seattle during the big event and watch the geocachers at work. Clearly GPS tracking is finding ways into our recreation plans!

Stolen iPads Recovered using Built-In GPS Tracking Technology

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/5HgTC)
Innovative, ground-breaking technological devices are on a continual rise in recent years. Perhaps the most famous device to hit the electronic markets is the Apple iPad. Unfortunately, the rise of technology has given thieves and burglars a greater selection of items from which to steal. Has your Blackberry, iPhone, iPad, Android, or any other electronic device been stolen? Have you recovered it?

A GPS tracking device is a handy means of recovering kidnapped people and animals or stolen possessions. GPS (global positioning system) has twenty-four satellites located in six orbital spheres above the earth. These satellites provide GPS coverage for virtually any place on earth. The satellites send a signal to a GPS-enabled device on earth, giving the real time location of an asset on the move. A GPS tracking device must be attached to the stolen goods in order to track it. It is also possible to use a GPS tracking device in historical time (not just real time). With the assistance of GPS tracking software, one can review a GPS recording at a later time and locate the whereabouts of a person or item.

IpadRecently, an Apple employee returned to his San Jose home to discover that his two iPads had been stolen. He later found out he arrived about an hour after the theft occurred. Realizing that he could use the GPS tracking device on his iPhone to recover his iPads, he (along with the assistance of a police officer) tracked the movement of the iPads through the city and then turn onto Cape George Place. Map of housing devThe GPS tracker led the Apple employee and police to a 1998 Dodge Neon. Police surrounded the vehicle and located the two iPads along with numerous other electronic devices. Estimated totals for all the stolen equipment were around $20,000. Police arrested Francisco Chavez and Arturo Urrutia (both of San Jose) and charged them with burglary. Arraignment is expected in Santa Clara County Superior Court.

The police did not know what the escape vehicle looked like. They followed an icon (representing the escape car) on an iPhone screen. The signal provided from one of the twenty-four satellites located above the earth to the GPS tracking device on the iPhone led the Apple employee and police to the stolen iPads. With technology continually improving and increasing in value, a GPS tracking device is very useful.

Why Choose GPS Tracking in Addition to Other Devices?

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/8K7JJ)
With all the technological gadgets on the rise these days, few carry as many benefits as a GPS tracking device. Maybe you can get on the internet, post tweets, update your Facebook status, and take pictures with your cell phone, and maybe your phone even has limited GPS tracking capabilities. Why should you further invest in another technological device?

Gadgets

1. Tracking devices can be hard-wired to your car and run all the time! No need to power it back up. But if you do like the portability of a device than a real GPS tracking device has batteries that last up to 90 days—far and beyond the life of your cell phone batteries. Most cell phone batteries must be recharged every other day. 90 days is a full three months, and the extra battery life can actually make a life and death difference for those that find themselves in an emergency situation.

2. The way the GPS satellite system works allows you to download information fast and the variety of information available is astounding. A series of 24 satellites orbiting in outer space work in groups of three to track the latitude and longitude of the receiver on earth, providing real-time data as to the location of the vehicle, individual, dog, etc. Between the active (real-time information) and passive (historical logs of what actually occurred) tracking systems, you can download the information to the internet or a mobile device and receive notifications when a geofence boundary is crossed or when speeding occurs in the vehicle. Again, cell phone data downloads are chargeable and expensive. Typical gps trackers do not incur those costs.

3. Types of information available through most GPS systems include speed and route (why was your teenage driver speeding and why were they in that section of town? Why did your employee stop for ice cream on the way back from that delivery across town?), geofencing capabilities (preset boundaries and receive notification when your loved one with Alzheimer’s wanders away), and historical logs (are your fleet drivers taking the most efficient routes? Do you have doubts about your spouse’s fidelity?). These are just a few GPS tracking features available on most models today, and there will be others as the technology continues to advance.

4. You can use tracking devices for more than just vehicles and individuals. You can keep track of your pets, packages that you mail, luggage that you take on the airplane, geocaching activities, extra security on hiking trips, children walking home after school…the possibilities are endless. In other words, GPS tracking devices go places your cell phone does not!

5. No regrets. You will never regret the investment in a GPS tracking device if someone you love becomes involved in an accident, if an aging loved one wanders away, or if someone attempts to abduct your child. The knowledge that you could have prevented tragedy can stay with you for the rest of your life. Having no regrets is reason enough to invest in a GPS tracking device for your safety.

GPS Tracking Replaces ?Helicopter Parenting?

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/b1vpx)
All parents know the fears associated with protecting their children from bad people and questionable situations. Many teenagers know the frustrations resulting from overly protective parents. Parents want to make sure their child is safe. Teens want to try out their newly found wings and venture into adulthood. Thus, conflict results. No parent wants to stunt the growth of a child. However, good parents want to stay active in their children's lives and protect them from unscrupulous activities that they are not mature enough to handle on their own just yet. Some people call that “helicopter parenting” because the parent never leaves the child alone to grow and learn. How can families walk the fine line between independence and safety? The answer lies with a high-tech device that is used more commonly than people think - GPS tracking.

Helicopter ParentSome parents and teens may find GPS teen tracking provides the solution. Many current GPS devices go beyond the more traditional uses as directional aids. For instance, two of the emerging types of GPS devices are personal tracking and vehicle tracking. Both of which can provide parents with peace of mind. Owners of these GPS devices can use them to keep an eye on their children’s actions and driving without invading their personal space or hindering their independence.

Most families don’t have children involved in feats such as Abby Sutherland’s attempt to circumnavigate the globe, (mentioned on a previous blog article) or Leigh Anne Drake’s thirteen-year-old son’s climb of Mt. Everest. In fact, most parents will question the judgment of a parent who allows their children to take such risks. However, just as teen tracking provided peace of mind for these parents, it can, through helping them stay aware of their child’s actions and location, provide a similar peace of mind for parents facing more everyday concerns.

For instance, teen tracking can help parents know where a young driver goes, what traffic laws they may break, and what speeds and locations the car experiences. Help your teen make good choices about friends and help them avoid dangerous situations. For example, although most parents probably never allow their thirteen-year-old to climb Mt. Everest, they may allow him or her to travel to a new, unfamiliar city. Tracking devices can ensure the teen stays safe or is found should a situation arise. It’s a good “Plan B” type of reassurance for the parents even though they have counseled their son or daughter on what to do in various situations.

Although many parents may feel these devices invade privacy, most will find that they actually provide the needed balance between parental control and teenage independence. By making sure that good habits are enforced, teens will have a better chance at survival alone, without Mom and Dad protecting them. In fact, most parents with children would do well to purchase a GPS teen tracking device.

Bank Robbers Beware! GPS Tracking Ensures Jail Time

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/hsMLR)
Money is tight for most people in these difficult economic times. While most people earn their money through working, others resort to illegal methods of obtaining money. Have you been a robbery victim? Is there someone you know and care about that has been a robbery victim?

GPS tracking devices are being used to track all types of assets. They allow law enforcement officials or anyone with a GPS-enabled tracking device to locate money, cars, people, pets, or other valuable possessions. This global positioning system (GPS) has twenty-four satellites placed above the earth that send signals to a GPS-enabled device (e.g., navigation system) in real time, allowing a person to precisely locate the position of stolen or lost assets. These satellites are placed throughout six orbital spheres, allowing coverage of virtually any place on earth.

Not everyone is knowledgeable in new security protections, so protecting assets with GPS tracking devices is always a wise move. Not everyone is knowledgeable in new security protections, so protecting assets with GPS tracking devices is always a wise move. Recently, Michael Jacob Beaman of Lehigh Township, was arrested, charged, and imprisoned for robbing $12,300 in cash from a Forks bank. Around 6 p.m., Beaman walked into the bank with a semi-automatic pellet gun, wearing a pair of orange camouflage gloves, demanding money from the bank tellers. He went behind the counters and began stealing cash from the registers, stuffing it into a pillow case. He then fled from the bank in a car. Alert and courageous bank tellers placed two GPS tracking devices into the stolen cash. Upon Beaman’s departure, bank tellers called 911 and immediately, the tracking device led them to George Street.. Police found Beaman and arrested him and located the stolen cash, orange gloves, and gun used during the attempted robbery. Beaman is being held on $50,000 bail in Northampton County Prison.

The GPS tracking devices placed in the money bag alerted police and GPS satellites sent signals to the police in real time, allowing them to track the money. Once movement of the stolen goods stops, police are able to move in and arrest a suspect, as they did with Beaman. Waiting for the device to stop allows the police to apprehend suspects in a safe manner and not endanger the community with high speed chases that could end in tragedy. Using technology protects the banks from even more hold-up activities as word travels that thieves not only get caught, but go to jail for a very long time. Discouraging more brazen hold-up activities will safeguard their employees as well. There are many reasons why GPS is an appropriate security tool used in businesses and law enforcement. Keeping the community safe and your assets secure are two great reasons to invest in this low cost, high tech solution. Sailors Ditch Star Tracking and Implement GPS

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/5ZRRg)
Sailors know the benefits that come from using a GPS tracking device with electronic charting for efficient and accurate navigating. Using a GPS in tandem with electronic charting gives you the benefit of preplanned routes. A laptop allows you to view exact real time positions on charts. An added benefit is the ability to link a GPS to your autopilot to provide corrections so that it will head directly toward a waypoint. GPS track logs will give you information to sail back the same route you came, as well as let you mark good routes, name favorite routes and give waypoints for reference. In the event of a man overboard, activation of the MOB button will give the exact position to guide you back which is crucial if visual contact is lost. GPS tracking devices allow you to set anchor drag alarms to ensure that you are alerted if drifting.

[caption id="attachment_5457" align="alignleft" width="280" caption="Still relying on the stars?"]stars for position[/caption]

A GPS tracking device uses the Global Positioning System, a space based navigation system that provides reliable location and time information for anywhere on earth. It is maintained by the United States government and is free for anyone’s use.

A recent example of the advantage of having a GPS tracking system onboard a boat is the case of Abby Sunderland, the American teen who was trying to sail non-stop around the world. As we now know, she did not achieve that goal and is probably lucky to be alive. She owes much to the GPS systems which transmitted her exact location to rescuers searching for her. Her boat lost its sail, leaving her at the mercy of a particularly dangerous and remote part of the Indian Ocean. Because her exact location was known, an airplane was sent since she was 400 miles from the nearest ship. The speed of her recovery may have played a part in the success of the rescue.

[caption id="attachment_5120" align="alignright" width="290" caption="GPS Tracking Ensures your Safety"][/caption]

GPS tracking devices offer an invaluable tool to sailors, particularly those in remote or dangerous areas, but even the recreational sailor can benefit from the electronic charting or linking to an autopilot. The man overboard (MOB) feature could certainly be a lifesaver and drag alarms will ensure that you rest better not worrying that your boat is drifting in the night. A GPS system is a small investment to make to ensure that your sailing is enjoyable and as trouble-free as possible.

Sex Offender GPS Tracking Ineffective without Proper Monitoring

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/WRume)
While many people think that GPS Tracking Systems are about the best thing since sliced deli meat, there has been some question recently as to the effectiveness of these systems if left unmonitored. Think of it in terms of a security camera. If you install a security camera, but then no one ever watches the tape to check for unusual behavior, is the camera really doing its job? When it comes to a GPS tracking system, the same concept applies.

John Albert Gardener was a sex offender with a GPS monitor tracking his every move. After he molested a 14-year-old girl in 2000 officials knew that he was dangerous, so they took precaution to make sure that Gardener went nowhere near another young woman. And yet, he succeeded in raping and murdering two helpless teenagers in 2009. How did this happen? Obviously, this paroled felon was not under as careful supervision as officials thought.

[caption id="attachment_5446" align="alignright" width="500" caption="photo credit to: D. Sharon Pruitt"][/caption]

When young Amber Dubois was abducted near her local high school one morning, obviously, no one was looking at John Gardener’s GPS tracking system. When Chelsea King was raped and murdered no policeman was aware. It was not until after the fact that the error of insufficient GPS monitoring was caught. Would these two young women be alive today if the system had been properly utilized? While the answer may be speculation, one thing is for sure: John Albert Gardener, a dangerous sex offender, was roaming the streets without anyone knowing where he was or what he was doing. Knowing the limits of technology is crucial to protecting the community at large.

GPS tracking systems are designed to protect the public from people like Gardener. With their monitoring capabilities these systems can keep police constantly debriefed as to the location of criminals wearing trackers. No sex offender wearing one should ever have the opportunity to repeat his offense, if carefully monitored. It is only when officials undervalue the tracking system and fail to monitor it that felons have the opportunity to go undetected.  Certain tracking devices set-up a "geo-fence" that when breached send off a signal or alarm to the monitoring station.  This is what should have been in place in this situation.

Statistics say that 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. That’s one in every six American women who will live the rest of their lives with an emotional scar. And what about the young women, like Amber Dubois and Chelsea King, whose lives tragically end after a rape? It’s time to take action against sexual offenders and utilize GPS tracking to the fullest extent of its ability. It’s time to take monitoring seriously.

Bike Baits with GPS Keep You Riding!

(My Original Blog Post: http://www.rmtracking.com/blog/2010/07/19/bike-baits-with-gps-keep-you-riding/)
Thousands of bicycles are stolen in large cities around the world every single day. Rather than chase petty thieves who steal bicycles, UK police have devised another plan. British police are now placing “bait bikes” at various points throughout Cambridge and London. These bikes are equipped with GPS trackers, and they have led police to many sought-after thieves.

As soon as word about the new bait bikes got out, British police reported that bicycle thefts at a Cambridge railway station dropped by 45% -- a very impressive number. Previously, police had no choice but to arrest anyone who was seen stealing a bicycle. Frequently, this meant arresting teens and small time thieves who usually work for larger crooks or for gang members. With the help of the new bait bikes, police can wait until a bicycle reaches its final destination before arresting anyone.

While the bait bikes have cyclists all over England cheering, some people are not behind the bait bike idea. Various UK residents have stated that the new bait bike program is a form of entrapment, while others claim that some bicycles are stolen entirely by accident. Even though police have listened to these complaints, the number of criminals who have been captured by police thanks to bait bikes far outweighs concerned citizens.

In the UK, a stolen bicycle can be easily sold to those seeking an inexpensive mode of transportation. While some bicycles are recovered, most stolen bikes are never seen again. There’s no debating the fact that bait bikes work, though UK police are not able to place these bicycles in every single area. Thus, the best way to prevent a bicycle from being stolen is to install a private GPS tracking device. By tracking a bicycle, authorities can easily recover any stolen bike.

Ride the Bus! GPS Tracking Improves City Transit

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/jkzou)

Just about everyone can relate to the feeling of sitting at a bus stop waiting for the bus to arrive. You glance at your watch, tap your feet, and glance at yesterday’s newspaper as the clock hands inch past the scheduled arrival time. Sadly, the bus has broken down a few streets over and the next one won’t arrive till well past the scheduled time. By the time you give up waiting, you’re left to flag down a cab or call a sympathetic friend and rush frantically to the office to avoid being late to your meeting. This may sound all too familiar to people who ride public transport regularly, but in some cities, GPS tracking may soon put a stop to scenarios like these.

[caption id="attachment_5412" align="alignleft" width="375" caption="Riders Know Accurate Arrival Times"][/caption]As more and more public transit systems equip streetcars and buses with GPS vehicle tracking, transportation managers can begin to use the information to keep schedules on track and to keep the public aware of delays. In Toronto, the transit commission has plans to institute a text message system that will allow commuters to receive a text message detailing the actual arrival time of the next car simply by texting an information request to a posted number. The GPS vehicle tracking devices already installed on the streetcars provide the information for transportation personnel and enable them to give much more accurate information to customers in a hurry. The group also has plans to incorporate a similar system for buses once all of the vehicles have been equipped with GPS tracking capabilities.

With deadlines, meetings, and projects all clamoring for attention, few people have time to wait around for a streetcar or bus that may be fifteen or twenty minutes behind schedule. With the help of GPS tracking, public transit users can know immediately whether the bus will be on time, a few minutes late, or hopelessly delayed. This information gives them the opportunity to make other arrangements immediately if necessary rather than waiting for a late bus only to give up in frustration and scramble for an alternative at the last minute.

As more and more cities incorporate GPS tracking into their transit systems, city dwellers will appreciate the benefits they receive from the tracking information. The next time you’re waiting for a late bus, consider asking your city officials whether plans are in the works for a GPS tracking system to be incorporated in local public transportation.

Less Chaos After a Hurricane with GPS Trackers in Use

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/40x79)
Hurricanes and tropical storms are just part of everyday life in Florida. Houses are built on high foundations, windows have hurricane shutters, and building codes are high. Florida citizens prepare yearly for power outages and flash floods. They are always stocked up on food and water and keep their flashlights in easy-to-find places. When they hear that a hurricane is coming, Floridians shut down and unplug their computers, secure their boats, and bring all of their patio furniture indoors. Could more be done to help Floridians weather the storms that so frequently occur? Could GPS trackers help? Absolutely!

Disasterous Hurricane Ike

GPS tracking devices are small units that can be attached to a vehicle, object, or person to track any movement. Passive trackers record precise location, speed, and direction, and the information from these units can then be downloaded onto a computer and viewed. Real time GPS trackers send signals out to satellites giving the same information, which can then be viewed on a virtual map using any computer with internet access. These systems have been used to track high-value items that could be stolen as well as record record-breaking achievements and competitions. And now they are being used to help Floridians during a power loss.

Florida Power and Light, a company that services the South Florida area, is incorporating GPS trackers into their business. These tracking units will allow them to see where their service trucks are located at all times so they can send the closest one to an area of power outage. Adding GPS technology to their company will allow Florida Power and Light to meet the needs of their customers much more quickly and efficiently which will lead to greater customer satisfaction.

Customers will also be able to notify Florida Power and Light of areas that have lost power. Those who have lost power can use their cell phones to either call, text, or send an email to the company.

GPS trackers will allow Florida Power and Light and other utility companies to respond quickly to the needs of the community, no matter what the circumstances are. Responding quickly is very important, not only for customer satisfaction, but for community safety. When they hear of a coming storm, Floridians can rest assured, not only because they themselves are prepared, but also because they know their utility company is ready as well.

GPS Fleet Tracking Gives Business a Competitive Edge

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/idE79)

A truck doesn’t make a delivery. Another one falls behind schedule. A third one can’t be found. And a fourth one keeps wasting valuable company time and money doing personal business. That should be the scenario for your competition. Why? You invested in GPS tracking and don’t have those old school problems!

Many owners and managers of trucking and delivery companies face a similar problem--keeping track of their workers on the road. Of course, responsible, trusted workers don’t need monitoring. However, no one can guarantee all their employees will follow company protocol and make the best use of their time when traveling away from headquarters. For this reason, many fleet managers wonder, “How do you keep an eye on your workers?”

[caption id="attachment_551" align="alignleft" width="427" caption="GPS Fleet Tracking Gives You a Competitive Edge"]gps fleet tracking[/caption]

Consider GPS fleet tracking. By notifying businesses owners of the movements and locations of their workers, these fleet tracking devices help fleet managers and owners know where their fleet is, what they’re doing, and whether they’re keeping on target with company goals and timetables.

GPS fleet tracking also helps ensure the safety of your workers. The United States’ Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Detention and Removal, for example, uses these devices for that purpose. The office deploys and tracks over 4500 US vehicles and more than 2000 of those vehicles have GPS fleet tracking devices. These devices not only help the DRO keep officers safe but also assist in improving maintenance, keeping costs low, and accomplishing mission goals.

Of course, most small and large businesses in the States won’t need GPS devices to accomplish purposes and goals of the same magnitude and importance as the United States Department of Homeland Security. However, the government and your own fleet have similar needs: safety, maintenance, cost reduction, and goal completion. And GPS fleet tracking can help you accomplish these goals more efficiently.

Some business owners may feel their own current methods of fleet management do the job and will not spend the time and money needed to outfit their fleet. Business owners with that mindset should consider doing a cost benefit analysis. Yes, GPS fleet tracking costs money. And, yes, your current methods may do a fairly adequate job (provided a trusted employee is not out sick or quits). Although you will spend time and money to implement fleet tracking, consider the time and money you could save by having up-to-date, real-time information about your fleet and its activities right at your fingertips. It could just give your business a competitive edge and result in a contract award. That’s a smart way to grow your business. Businesses that embrace and use new technologies will be considered innovative and forward thinking. Isn’t that how you want your business to progress?

Yoda Speaks for TomTom Sat Nav

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/vT5EZ)

(Here at Rocky Mountain Tracking we occasionally stray from our focus on gps tracking devices to highlight some fun and interesting happenings in similar navigational devices.  This article does just that.  Hope you enjoy!)

Mr. T, Dennis Hopper, and Burt Reynolds have been a part of the TomTom family for some time now, but the company has just added a slew of Star Wars voices to the mix. Consumers who have a TomTom navigational device have been able to listen to CP30 and Darth Vader since June, and the wise and loveable Yoda has recently joined the bunch. TomTom has added these new voices in the hopes of luring sat nav users away from competitors such as Garmin and Navman.

When making a sat nav comparison, those new to the GPS navigational world may be tempted to look for devices that come with familiar voices. In fact, finding the latest and greatest navigational voice is quickly becoming the new trend within the sat nav world. Each Star Wars voice command download will cost consumers £7.95 – a small price to pay to have Darth Vader as your navigational commander.

Even though Yoda is the latest Star Wars voice to be added to the TomTom Star Wars collection, sources say that the voice of Hans Solo is expected to surface sometime in August. TomTom recently stated that the Star Wars voice commands have all been derived from the first three Star Wars films (‘Star Wars,’ ‘The Empire Strikes Back,’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’), since these are the films that die-hard Star Wars fans enjoy most.

While some drivers may find the backwards commands of Yoda (including: “…hmmm, keep to the right then take a sharp left. Control, control, if a Jedi you wish to be”) annoying, others are quickly downloading Yoda’s reassuring voice to their TomToms. In addition to listening to favorite Star Wars characters, a few select voices also come with theme music.

The company behind the films, LucasFilms, is thrilled that TomTom has chosen to showcase Star Wars characters. Director of International Licensing and Marketing for Lucas Licensing, Casey Collins, believes that “Star Wars fans are sure to be delighted when they hear just how great these voices sound on their TomTom navigation devices.”

Thus far, Collins is entirely accurate in his assumption, as Star Wars fans can’t get enough of the new TomTom lineup. If you’d like to “join the revolution” you can find excellent TomTom sat nav deals at Sat Nav Expert (http://ping.fm/d1LQA).

School Districts Increase Efficiency with GPS Tracking

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/iUWrU)
School bus operators and commercial fleet managers have the same problems in managing their fleets. It can be difficult to gather precise information about what route was driven, how long stops took, and where a disabled vehicle is located. Lack of this information limits the ability to plan the most efficient route for each fleet vehicle. Some school districts are trying GPS fleet tracking technology to keep tabs on their buses.

gps tracking for school bus fleets

Fleet tracking works like any other GPS tracking. Each vehicle in the fleet is equipped with a device that communicates with satellites to determine the location and movement of the vehicle. This information can be monitored constantly or checked at regular intervals, depending on the device and software used. It can be real-time or recorded for future study. Fleet tracking puts together a system to monitor multiple vehicles at the same time and record the information so it can be evaluated and compared. Companies then use the information to keep drivers accountable, calculate costs, and plan more efficient movement of people and freight.

The Omaha public school district tested GPS fleet management on five buses for six weeks this past spring. Transportation director David Wolfe was impressed with how helpful the information was. The GPS system was then selected by the Sherwood Foundation from a list of priorities to be paid for with a large grant.

The information from the GPS system will be used to monitor a variety of things. It will record when doors open and when the stop arm of a bus is used. It will record idle times so that routes can be adjusted to be more efficient. It will estimate arrival times for buses that are running late. It will show the location of a broken-down bus.

All of this information will help the school district run efficient routes, saving on fuel and other operating expenses. It will keep drivers accountable to drive both safely and efficiently. It will keep parents informed on where their children are and when they will arrive home. Most importantly, it will keep children safer because their location will be immediately known if a problem ever arises. More school districts should try fleet tracking with their buses and see the benefits of this valuable way to manage a fleet of vehicles with GPS tracking.

GPS Trackers Locate Stolen ATV?s

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/8qw56)
Burglars and thieves are swiping anything valuable on which they can get their hands. Have you been an unfortunate victim of burglary or theft? Has your money, car, pet, or ATV ever been stolen? Was it recovered and returned to you? Unless you had a tracking device installed on the asset, the answer is most likely “no recovery”.

[caption id="attachment_1712" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Track your Recreational ATV's with GPS!"]atv gps tracking[/caption]

A GPS tracking device assists the owner of a GPS-enabled device to precisely locate the position of stolen assets. The global positioning system (GPS) works in real time or when reviewing recorded footage at a later time. The GPS tracking device connects with one of the twenty-four global satellites located above the earth in six different orbital spheres. Location data is transmitted to a GPS-enabled device, reporting the location of stolen goods or people. The global satellites provide coverage of virtually any place on earth.

You may have heard about the recent robberies of many ATV’s and RTV’s by Jaime Castellanos and some of his accomplices. The Texas-based group stole and then resold ATV’s and RTV’s for a profit to unsuspecting friends, coworkers, and acquaintances, often misleading their consumers by telling them that they did not want to part with the item but needed the money. In other cases, they told their victims about a nasty divorce one of their partners-in-crime was experiencing and how they did not want their wife to keep it in the settlement. Suspects also claimed the stolen unit as used and asked for half the price. This crime spree took place over several months, resulting in the Texas governor’s office granting two Polaris ATV’s and a tracking device. These items were used in April 2010 after the thieves stole the Polaris ATV. The tracking device on the Polaris ATV allowed police to follow the movement of the stolen asset, locate where they stopped moving, and then make the arrests and recover the stolen goods. In this particular case, police recovered $200,000 worth of stolen goods. The GPS device led police to the location of the stolen goods by connecting with one of the global satellites and transmitting the location data to their GPS-enabled device. The GPS also revealed a much larger sting operation by the perpetrators.

A GPS tracking device is an excellent method of locating your lost or stolen assets. They have been successfully used in tracking money stolen from banks, pets kidnapped from home, spousal infidelity and vehicles. If you are concerned about theft in your area, a GPS tracking device might be just what you need.

GPS Tracking is Most Sought After Application

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/moxZL)
The forces that represent two sides of the consumer-based GPS Tracking market are heating up with competition.  And, it appears that the winner will be GPS enabled smartphones.  Here’s why:

Portable is Preferred

When GPS navigation units hit the market, they were an instant hit with consumers.  You were spoon-fed directions to your destination while enjoying some robust benefits in helping you choose restaurants, etc.  Those are still very important features.  But, now they are being out-flanked by the next generation: GPS enabled smartphones.

[caption id="attachment_3989" align="alignright" width="380" caption="GPS & Smartphones"][/caption]

Users are paying out big monthly fees for the privilege to be able to use these services.  And, being able to carry the device with them is a huge advantage.  And, one that the dedicated manufacturers might not be able to overcome unless they change their units so that they can work in both a vehicle and as a portable unit.

Security is a High Priority

Notice how many stories are popping up that are touting GPS enabled cell phones and how they have helped save a life?  People are very interested in the safety aspect of GPS enabled cell phones.  Kids are being tracked and so are elderly.

While security is one of the most popular features, there is also a security risk with GPS enabled smartphones:  tracking of your location at any time that you have the GPS signal turned on.  This allows those who can get your information to be able to see where you are at any given time (as long as your signal strength is high enough).

Most people are unaware of this risk, but the word is getting out.  This is the reason that users should consider purchasing a separate, dedicated GPS Tracking device.  They consume less power than smartphones (GPS enabled smartphones primary downfall is the speed at which the battery is drained by constant use).

Dedicated GPS Tracking devices can be hidden, too.  These units are very small and can operate for days between charges.

It turns out that the best kept secret is a GPS Tracking device in addition to your smartphone.  Use the smartphone for the things that it does the best.  Then, keep your GPS device near at all times to help get the most out of safety features and benefits.  You never know when it might come in handy, even if you still choose to use the GPS enabled features of your smartphones, you will have a backup, just in case.

Be Prepared and Don?t Panic

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/OJziW)
by Greg Bartlett

In times of crisis, a minute—even a few seconds—can mean the difference between life and death.  It can mean the difference between recovery and permanent injury.

[caption id="attachment_1100" align="alignright" width="425" caption="Emergencies & GPS"][/caption]

Anyone who has ever had experience with first aid or CPR training knows the vital importance of quickly dealing with emergencies.  Emergencies can happen at any time, at any place, to any person.  It can be the collapse of a building during a earthquake; it can be the moment when an elderly adult crosses the line between independence and dependence; it can be the two seconds when a child is left unattended; it can be that one second of drowsiness that hits the driver on the highway.

One way that you can help to close that vital time gap in an emergency is with the use of a GPS tracking device.  Many GPS tracking devices now have an emergency button that allows the wearer to send an alert in a dangerous situation.  Most devices have a battery life of up to 30 days (some even more), and some even receive signal even indoors or in obstructed areas.

If you work on construction sites, or live/work in areas that are prone to earthquakes or other disasters that cause buildings to collapse, you should consider this type of tracking device.  Knowing exactly where you are in the rubble in event of disaster can mean the difference between life and death.  The emergency button sends immediate panic alerts to spread the word that you need help right away.

Other scenarios include car trouble far from home, or assault/robbery.  It could be something as simple as a safety feature and backup for a first-time babysitter—just press the button.  It is also a good feature to use for elderly loved ones who aren’t quite ready to transition into assisted living, but are at some risk for falling or experiencing health problems at home.

GPS tracking devices utilize satellites in outer space, which allows for accuracy in determining location.  This can save time if the victim of an emergency is unable to give direction as to his or her location.  It can simply be determined by the GPS device.  It may seem like taking these precautions may be going to the extreme, but when an emergency strikes, it is always better to be safe than sorry.  You will never regret finding your loved one in time to prevent serious injury and death.

Supply Chain Managers Embrace GPS Tracking

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/TugQu)
The business activity known as global supply chain management has at its core the managing and monitoring of goods and products as they move through the manufacturing process to the end customer.

[caption id="attachment_5229" align="alignright" width="283" caption="GPS & Supply Chain Management"][/caption]

This business activity is being integrated with real-time ERP processes more and more.  What this means is that Enterprise Resource Planning at the business is chopping the processes down into small parts so that it can be monitored at more places along the line.  This system of checks helps in many ways.

Quality

First, and maybe foremost is quality.  Not only can the manufacturing process be watched closer, quality standards can be monitored better, too.  This helps manufacturers find and fix issues with quality it turns into even larger problems later on after the product has been made.  Giving quality a preeminent position like this is good for customer satisfaction.

Speed of Manufacturing

Most businesses build to order.  There are very few warehousing operations that hold finished goods that are waiting to be ordered by end customers.  Because of the emphasis on real-time processes, the speed at which products are produced can increase (all things being equal).  Being able to maintain quality at the same time helps businesses get products into the hands of customers sooner.

Customer Service

Customers can now be kept in closer touch with the manufacturing of the products that they order.  Some companies even provide a portal from which a customer can monitor product manufacturing and their specific order as it moves along the way.  This can be both good and bad in that the customer can see stops in the process which raises concerns about delivery dates, etc.  Strong communications must exists between the two so that this does not turn into a disaster.

It does not end there, however.  Once the manufacturing process is completed, then the deliver process begins.  But, it is a seamless operation in that GPS Tracking takes up where RFID left off in the monitoring of the logistics process.

Semi trucks and trailers are the first step in the monitoring process.  Trucks and trailers both include GPS Tracking systems to help monitor their progress.  And, it is helpful to be able to track these units should they become the targets of thieves (which is happening in greater numbers these days).

Cargo containers are also being outfitted with GPS Tracking so that they can be tracked separately from the trucks and trailers.

Finally, many products that are banded together in the shipping process have a GPS Tracking device hidden among the boxes.

Not only is this good insurance for getting products where they need to be, but it allows for minute tracking which keeps the end customer and the shipper aware of the precise location of important deliveries.  Schedules can be coordinated and marketing plans can be shifted to accommodate any delays or advances in shipping time lines.  GPS tracking is a "must-have" item in the supply chain managers arsenal of customer service tools.

Don?t Let Outdoor Activities End in a Tragedy

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/gNjU2)
Outdoor activities and extreme sports are enjoyed by a group of people who find living life on the dangerous side very exciting.

[caption id="attachment_5222" align="alignright" width="419" caption="GPS Tracking & Outdoor Activities"][/caption]

But, even the casual outdoor lover can find themselves in some precarious positions if they are not careful.  Recently a group ventured into the Elkhorn river Near Omaha, Nebraska, and was unprepared for the waters that they encountered and ended up with a capsized water craft and a near drowning.

Fortunately for them, one in the group had a smartphone with GPS Tracking enabled which helped local fire and rescue to pinpoint their location and assist in the recovery of the group members.

This incident underscores two very important things about going out into unfamiliar places at particularly dangerous times.

Proper Preparation is Mandatory

There are certain things that need to be done to help make sure that there are no disasters that could have been avoided with proper preparation.

First, investigate the area into which you are going.  Get a map of your destination and note specific spots on the map that can help you: fire/rescue facilities, hospitals and police stations.  Take the map with you when you go.

Next, make a trip itinerary and give it to those you leave behind.  Put details in it like where you are going, when you will arrive there and when you will be coming back.  Also, note if you are going to be out of communications with the rest of the world and when you expect to re-connect.  Leave a copy of a map that shows your intended path.

Inclusion of Technology Can Assist

GPS Tracking devices are worthy of a place among your gear because they can be helpful if you should become stranded on your trip.  And that includes your treks into the wilderness where most cellular signals do not exist.  GPS enabled smartphones are great, but not if there is no signal with which authorities can home in on if there is a problem.

When you arrive at your destination, find out if local authorities have the ability to track GPS signals.  If so, link up with them so that if there is a problem, they can instantly view your location and respond to any emergencies that might arise.

These are the base activities that you must perform to help protect yourself.  These common sense tips are available to anyone who chooses to use them.  And, for those who do not, their risk is greater.  Have fun, but remember to be prepared.

Be Cautious on the Net and Stay Safe with GPS Tracking

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/8PXuL)
It comes with territory, so to speak, that social networking opens users up to dangerous security issues.  The two sites that are encouraging ‘checking in’ wherever you may be are gowalla.com and foursquare.com.

The first reason that these social networking sites are raising concern is because they encourage users to ‘check in’ which provides your location instantly to those in your group.

[caption id="attachment_5218" align="alignright" width="435" caption="The Internet & Security"][/caption]

The second reason is because they are being used improperly by those who sign up.

The positive and great things that smartphone technology has brought us have created a breeding ground for potential hazards.  As with anything, caution is the way to approach these sites.

A social network that encourages you to provide your location is dangerous in that not only do people know where you are, but they also know where you are NOT.  Home comes to mind as the most likely place that you are vulnerable.  Thieves target houses that they know are unoccupied.

And, just because your social network includes only ‘friends’ does not mean that you cannot be targeted.  Social networking sites are not known for their impeccable security methods.

In their defense, site creators issue guidelines on how to use their site and where to use it.  It does not include things like telling your social network that you are at home, in bed, or God forbid, in the bathroom.  You are encouraged to meet up with those in your social network at public places and entertainment venues, etc.  And, they include some already marked out public places.

But, you can add your own, and here’s where the problem of security comes into play.  People are adding their homes, rooms in their homes and even (as mentioned) their beds.  The more users tell people where they are located, the more they give out information on where they are not or, if they are in a place that makes them vulnerable.

One important guideline when using these is to only check in at public places.  Keep your private treks at or from home private.

Also, one last thing to consider is to purchase a GPS Tracking device to help monitor your locations (privately) and add an extra layer of insurance from a security standpoint.  These devices are much less expensive than ever, and you can find a model that will meet your needs.

When opening up yourself to potential invasions of security or privacy it is best to take extra precautions to protect yourself because you never know when you might be the target of some very bad people.

Car Thieves Strike Craigslist

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/WXK0i)
by Harriette Halepis

Source acquired via Newser, July 8, 2010 – Public warnings related to Craigslist are nothing new, but this time the warning is coming straight from the New York Police Department. The NYPD has been repeatedly warning the general public to be extra careful when allowing potential buyers to test drive listed cars. Savvy Craigslist listers are quickly finding out that GPS tracking devices can do more than track stolen goods – they can potentially save lives.

[caption id="attachment_5214" align="alignright" width="378" caption="Craigslist and Auto Theft"][/caption]

The NYPD has picked up on a recent scam that many within the New York City (and other) area have fallen prey to. By contacting a Craigslist poster, thieves pretend to be interested in various listed automobiles. Then, upon asking to take a car for a test drive, the cars disappear entirely. Most of these vehicles wind up in chop-shops, and some are resold after identifying vehicle information has been altered.

In addition to simply taking a car for a test drive and never returning, the NYPD is also warning Craigslist posters about a new carjacking tool dubbed “the jiggler.”  This tool can be inserted into certain ignitions causing a car to start up automatically. Once a thief notes the location of a Craigslist car for sale, this tool is frequently used to steal any unattended vehicle.

While it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on any car that is listed on Craigslist, it is not a good idea to go along for a test drive. Many thieves are armed and dangerous, and car owners may become injured if a thief decides to steal a car while an owner is present.

A safer option is to install a personal GPS tracking device inside of a vehicle. In the event that a vehicle is stolen, this device will lead owners and authorities directly to the automobile. Not only is a tracking key an effective way to find a stolen car, it’s also a great way to prevent an unsuspecting owner of becoming injured.

Stop High Speed Pursuits with GPS Devices

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/4jsBq)
It’s about time that we begin to find some ways to reduce high speed police chases in our communities.  These events often include serious crashes which results in injury to those being pursued, the police officers or innocent bystanders.  While one of the ways to reduce the risk is for police to pull off of these activities, there are methods that are being attempted to make this happen.

[caption id="attachment_5194" align="alignright" width="480" caption="Police Chases & GPS Tracking"][/caption]

The latest is called a StarChase system.  The system used a propelled GPS Tracking device that is fired from the pursuing police vehicle to the fleeing subjects car which will attach to the back so that the car can be tracking via GPS Tracking.

This allows the police to pull back on the chase and allow the fleeing driver to slow down.  This new development gets strong consideration because of the following reasons:

Public Safety Needs are Considered Ahead of Apprehension

One of the main cries against high-speed chases is that it puts the safety of the public at risk.  Any time a chase ensues, speed limits and traffic signals are ignored.  The mere presence of a police vehicle spurs the fleeing subjects to go even faster.  Depending on the charges that are pending against the driver, police are more resolute in the capture of the perpetrators.  This is especially true if the subjects have tried to deliberately injure an officer.

Reduces Accidents and Innocent Bystanders Involvement

If the fleeing subject slows down (after presumably eluding the police), accidents would be avoided and it also might make them think that they have succeeded in shaking the police.  And, even if they know about the tracking device, they would have to stop their vehicle to try to remove it, which would give police the opportunity they need to surround them and prevent the chase from continuing.

Assists Police and Protects the Public

Using the GPS Tracking device as a guide, dispatchers can direct police vehicles to the exact location of the fleeing vehicle.  Using a backed-off method and a surrounding philosophy, those who are trying to get away will soon learn that they cannot do so which will hopefully convince them to stop.

As gps devices become more of a standard tool for our police forces nationwide, we will all be able to rest a little easier knowing that high speed chases will become a thing of the past.  Hopefully sooner, rather than later.

Fake Cocaine Embedded with GPS Tracking Nabs Police Officer

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/30mT8)
Source acquired via Toronto Sun, July 2, 2010 – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recently set up a drug sting operation called “Project Ocaper” that was meant to track down Peruvian drug dealers. What the RCMP discovered was that a fellow RCMP officer stole a brick of fake cocaine along with various other confiscated goods.

[caption id="attachment_5211" align="alignright" width="425" caption="Drugs in Bag"][/caption]

Constable Sheldon Cook was found guilty of stealing one brick of fake cocaine and 21 MP3 players from a police building. Cook stole the fake drugs and the MP3 players while he was on duty. What Cook did not know was that RCMP police had filled numerous bags with flour and GPS tracking devices in order to arrest Peruvian drug dealers. When the drug shipment arrived at a Toronto airport (inside boxes of mangoes), police began to track the shipment.

While the GPS trackers that were inside of the fake cocaine shipment stopped working for two days, police were able to track the fake cocaine once the devices began working again. RCMP found the GPS trackers inside of a shipment that was inside of Cook’s home. Cook told a Toronto court that he had been framed by his fellow police officers, though he was found guilty. Cook will be sentenced in Toronto on August 5, 2010.

While the GPS trackers that were inside of the fake cocaine shipment did not work at first (for unknown reasons), the two trackers eventually led police to Cook’s home. Without the help of the GPS tracking devices, Cook would not have been apprehended. The Toronto court that heard Cook’s case did not believe that Cook had been set up by his co-workers. Instead, Judge Casey Hill found that Cook has acted alone when he stole both the fake cocaine and the MP3 players.
