It is sad that it has come to this, but the poor economy along with the financial woes in California has placed the justice system in Los Angeles in a position of having to close at certain times. These limitations have a detrimental effect on those who need the system to work for them.

If you do not live in California, you're probably not too concerned about this issue, but keep in mind that other states have serious budget issues that could affect their ability to serve citizens who are going through the judicial system. Here are some things to think about that could keep you from having to go through this scenario:
Look for Alternatives
Most people do not realize that there is an alternative to civil court proceedings. It's called arbitration. What this provides is a solution to a legal matter between two parties that is decided outside of the court system by an arbiter who examines both sides of an issue and comes up with a solution based on the merits of each side. The decisions are fair and unbiased and should satisfy even the most serious of cases.
The other way that using arbitration can be effective is that you avoid having to hire a lawyer to represent you. Most times you do not need legal representation for these cases, so this method can be cost effective, too.
Use Technology
Protect your assets (cars and other moveable items like RVs, boats, 4-wheelers, etc) with GPS Tracking devices. This is a good idea not only to help you in the event of a theft (criminal act against you) but also against acts that might not be considered but civil in nature. These include incidents of accidents that happen on your property or as a result of negligence in the use or operation of your assets. Tracking devices allow you to monitor your things and report on data like location, speed, direction of travel, etc, that can be used as evidence to prove or disprove liability.

These are interesting days in which we live. We are placed situations of liability more than ever before. Part of this comes from the mindset of people who are opportunistic in events and incidences that happen to them.
