[Blog] Vanderbilt University Adopts GPS Tracking Technol...: By Harriette Halepis

Source acquired via Inside Vandy, April 9, 2010, Nashville, Tennessee - Many Vanderbilt students await the arrival of a "Vandy Van" during the dark and cool evening hours. These school vans shuttle students to and from certain destinations on a regular basis. The problem is that making a student wait around for a bus that may, or may not, be on time is not only time-consuming, it's also incredibly dangerous.

Even on university campuses that seem safe, student attacks are a real and present danger. That's why Vanderbilt has decided to install GPS tracking technology inside of every Vandy Van. With the help of sophisticated GPS technology, students will be able to track the arrival and departure of each van. In addition, students who want to be alerted when a van draws near can have alerts sent via cell phone.

Not only will the addition of GPS trackers inside of Vandy Vans eliminate the need for students to wait in the dark for vans to arrive, but these trackers will also justify the expense of purchasing new vans. By recording the number of times that these vans are used, Vanderbilt will have a valid reason to purchase new vans during upcoming years. At present, more than $150,000 will be spent upgrading the Vanderbilt van system over the next year.

While the GPS tracking technology will cost the university $10,860 to install, this cost is worth every penny to Vanderbilt, since it means that university students will be a lot safer while waiting for a van to arrive. As one school spokesperson put it "...we don't want people waiting outside in the middle of the night...and then, when they think no Vandy Van is coming, believing that their only recourse is to walk alone across a dark campus."

Thanks to GPS tracking technology students on the Vanderbilt University campus will no longer have to wait alone, walk across a dark campus, or wonder if a bus is going to arrive. Instead, students will know exactly when a Vandy Van will arrive, and this makes all the difference in the world. Other universities across the United States have implemented GPS tracking technology, and many more are expected to follow s...
