GPS technology makes use of the thirty some satellites in space. Each of these satellites transmits information, and they send this information to various receivers here on earth. The receivers come in form of individual trackers that can be monitored on any web-enabled device such as a computer or mobile phone. GPS tracking devices can help you keep tabs on things and people that are important to you.

Animal tracking has always had a part in the GPS tracking world. Some of these GPS tracking devices track pets. Pet owners will be the first to admit that their pets are very important to them; for many, these pets are almost like members of the family. Why wouldn't they want to know where they were at all times? Others track pets that are valuable, such as purebred puppies or exquisite racehorses. Other GPS tracking devices track wild animals and endangered animals such as whooping cranes. This helps scientists understand these animals' migration habits and track the number of animals that are still living.
While these are important ways to use GPS tracking devices on animals, there is a new way to utilize these devices on animals. You may have heard of a little race in Alaska called the Iditarod...obviously, we know that this is no small race. It is a world famous and extremely grueling dogsled race. It stretches for almost 1200 miles, and mushers (sled drivers) and their dogs run through blizzards, hurricane-force winds, and temperatures up to 100 degrees below zero. With all the variables to deal with, the last thing that drivers need to worry about is getting lost without any hope of being found. This has been a scary reality for many years in the history of this race. However, not long ago, race officials began installing GPS tracking devices on the dogsleds. The implications of this are huge!
Although GPS tracking devices do not help the musher know where he is, it does help the officials back at headquarters know where each of their drivers is. This way, if any driver and sled team is remaining in one place for too long, or if they venture way off the race path, a search party can be deployed. The use of GPS technology in this race is a great addition; it definitely puts the safety of the mushers and their dogs as a prior...
